Frequently asked questions

Q: Which is the closest airport?
A: Tarbes-Lourdes is about 20-25 minutes drive from the chalet.  Pau is also very close by, but we tend to use Toulouse (about 1 1/2 - 2 hours drive) as it has frequent flights from a number of airports in the UK.

Q: Do I need a car to get to the villa?
A: A car is recommended to reach the villa from your port of entry into France, and also to explore the local area (although a bike is also a good way of getting around).

Q: How far is the nearest village/shops?
A: Our village, Pouzac, with a few local shops (boulangerie/boucherie), fuel and supermarkets is a few minutes drive (or cycle) away.  It is not really walkable as the route is along a main road.  The nearby town of Bagneres-de-Bigorre is about 5 minutes drive and there you can find everything from local shops to banks, post office, restaurants, and many other amenities.

Q: Is there somewhere I can hire a bike?
A: There is a good cycle-hire shop called Aneto in Beaudean, on the road to La Mongie, on the other side of Bagneres.

Q: Since the pool is unheated, how warm does it get?
A: The pool is usually at a swimable temperature from June to October.  The warm summers ensure that the temperature is kept comfortable in the mid to high 20 degrees C.

Q: Is there plenty of shade in the garden and around the pool?
A: There are many trees in the garden and the pool has a fence all around (as required by French Law).  We also have a number of large parasols available for guests' use.

Q: Is it possible to go fly-fishing in the local streams?
A: Fly-fishing is possible in any of the local streams, including the Adour which runs close by the chalet.  Further information and details of permit requirements are available at http://www.federationpeche.fr/65/index.php (NB this website is in French)

Q: I can't do without my iPad - is there any wifi available?
A: A free wifi connection is accessible throughout the house and garden.

Q: Is there a telephone?
A: There is no landline available for guests' use.  There is a mobile signal on the EE network which can be picked up by UK mobiles.

Q: Do I need to bring towels?
A: Bathroom towels are provided but please bring swimming towels if you wish to use the pool.

Q: Are there any tennis racquets at the chalet?
A: Yes, there are currently 4 tennis racquets in the basement with the garden furniture (as long as we have no McEnroe moments) which are available for guest use, plus a couple of sets of balls (bought last year).

Q: How do I get to the ski-ing?
A: The nearest resort is La Mongie, which is about 30 minutes by car from the chalet.  If you do not wish to drive, there is a shuttle bus from Bagneres which runs on weekends and during peak season in February/March. There is also a bus serving the resort which runs from Tarbes and Bagneres (with a request stop at Pouzac).

Q: Where can I hire ski/snowboard equipment?
A: Ski, snowboard, boot, raquette and helmet hire is available from any of the shops on the road to La Mongie, as well as in La Mongie itself, right opposite the slopes.

Q: What about lift passes?
A: Lift passes can be bought online at http://www.n-py.com/en/winter/homepage-winter.html or at the resorts. There are many different passes available.
